Last night I received the sad news that my friend and colleague Michael Casey had passed away. Michael was the Vice President for Advancement at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, where we worked together starting in 2017. His sudden loss has been difficult, but I want to take a moment to honor his memory and reflect on his incredible career and impact.
Michael was born in 1959 and grew up in the Boston area. He attended Harvard University from 1977-1981, graduating with a BA in Celtic Studies with a focus on Irish history and literature. His love of learning and passion for education set the stage for his long career in advancement and fundraising for higher education.
After graduating from Harvard, Michael embarked on an accomplished career spanning over 30 years focused on advancement, fundraising, and communications. Some highlights include:
Vice President for Advancement, Trinity College (2017-Present) - Oversaw all fundraising, alumni relations and parent programming. Served on the President's cabinet and worked closely with the Board of Trustees. Managed a team of 55 advancement professionals.
Vice President, Skidmore College (2000-2017) - Led Skidmore's advancement division, overseeing $25-30M raised annually. Managed fundraising campaigns that increased support by 150%. Also directed alumni/parent relations and communications.
Director of National Programs, Wesleyan University (1993-2000) - Served as second-in-command for a 75-person advancement team. Directed career programs, annual fund, corporate fundraising and more. Led planning for a $250M campaign.
Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, Franklin & Marshall College (1990-1993) - Increased annual fundraising from corporations and foundations by 40%. Helped plan a $100M campaign.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Michael was known for his collaborative leadership style and gift for bringing people together. He cultivated deep relationships with donors, volunteers, campus partners and colleagues. Michael had a talent for motivating teams and helping people connect to the mission of educational advancement.
At his core, Michael was passionate about education, students, and building community. Throughout his career, he worked tirelessly to expand access to top liberal arts institutions because he believed deeply in their power to transform lives. Michael was heavily involved with local nonprofits, schools and civic groups, always striving to strengthen the communities around him.
Michael Casey leaves behind a profound legacy after empowering countless students to achieve their dreams through his advancement work. He touched many lives through his warmth, humor and selfless spirit. I will always remember Michael as a dedicated professional, insightful leader and caring friend.
